kitchen progress

Hey guys! I am so busy right now I haven't had time to really write anything, but I wanted to give you all an update, because SO much is happening right now! And the wedding is in 34 days and counting...!!!

Our biggest project recently has been the kitchen. We are so close to being finished, I can't wait!

First we painted...then we put new oak hardwood floors throughout the kitchen, which was a fun but tiring experience! My thighs have never been so sore!

Next, we installed the cabinets!! This was so frustrating because everything had to match up just so, especially since we put an additional row of cabinets on the top. Eventually there will be crown molding so that the cabinets meet the ceiling completely.

The cabinets felt like they took forever, but now so much has happened that it feels like 2 years ago! After the cabinets, the counters were installed. This honestly isn't the best picture by any means.

I am SO glad the counters are over with because even though we actually did no work on them, it was absolutely the most stressful decision yet. I spent hours going back and forth between different colors and different materials and what we actually wanted/could spend. In the end, we went with the Formica 180 FX Calacatta Marble. And to my great relief, I LOVE them. They are awesome, beautiful, and are going to be so much easier to maintain than any of the other options I wanted. My close second was butcher block, to add warmth. However it was a tad more expensive (especially if you want quality butcher block) and the maintenance was a little scary...and one of my pet peeves is water marks and I don't think in the end I would be very happy with them, although they are so beautiful.

The best thing? The formica is so much cheaper than any other option, and the 180 FX they have come up with is amazing! They take HD pictures of real marble and put it on the formica, so there isn't that repetitive pattern that most formica is known for.

Next, we tiled the backsplash. I'm obsessed with subway tile (and its cheap!) so we went with that again.

Yes, we used a really, really dark grout. I love the contrast!! Looks a little scary going on :)

The last big thing that we did was paint the built in. It had already been painted and then someone painted a faux wood finish on it. We painted it gray, and I couldn't be happier! It ties it all together. My Dad also wrapped the column that is in the island, to give it a less modern look with more character. (Please excuse the mess!)

So that is pretty much the kitchen in a nutshell. We are waiting on the floors to be finished so that the appliances can be delivered and hooked up-- I can't wait to share pictures of the finished floors, appliances, and the cabinets with actual hardware!! It's coming together so quickly now :)

  1. Hello, we are going with the same formica. What edge did you pick? Also, was your subway tile from lowes? What color was your grout. I know you said dark but was it grey? Love how your kitchen turned out!

    1. Wow, Amy, thank you! I am so, so sorry that I didn't see this comment until now. I feel terrible! But I will go ahead and answer them just in case.

We went with the Ogee edge. We have loved our Formica counters so far. I cook a lot and spill things constantly and they just wipe right up. I do use the crockpot a lot and I make sure to elevate the crockpot a little because I heard it can delaminate the Formica over an extended period of use.

The tile is from Lowe's like you thought! It is the in-stock American Olean "white" though they have other selections online, albeit at a higher price.

And the grout is called charcoal grey, so it is a very dark grey that looks black from a distance.

Again, so sorry but I do appreciate your questions! They were great ones and I should have included that information in the post. I hope your kitchen renovation went/is going wonderfully.

  2. Hi, kitchen looks great! where did you buy the formica countertop? Evertime I search for formica marble counter tops it just routes me to the DIY Laminate sheets. I dont want to get into creating a counter top I just want to purchase it precut.

  3. Love your kitchen! Can you post pics to show the sink and finished kitchen? It looks like you have a cooktop in the island and then a hood for a range on the other wall?
